Our Adoption Process
Have you decided to adopt a VPFP dog? Please read through the following adoption information to find out how to bring your new family member home with you.
The Virginia Paws for Pits adoption application is the first step in our adoption process. Please answer all questions on the application as completely as possible. This will help us determine if the dog you're applying for is the right match for you, and which dog may be the best fit for your family and lifestyle. Once you submit your application, you can expect to hear from a VPFP board member within a few days.
HOME VISIT/INTERVIEW
After your adoption application has been approved, we will schedule your home visit/in person meet. During your home visit, a VPFP team member will come to your home to see where your new dog will be living. We will point out any potential hazards and address with you any concerns or questions you may have. The home visit is not a "white glove" test by any means, it is merely a good way for us to get to know you and pass along some of our breed expertise to help ensure the safety of your new dog.
CONTRACT/ADOPTION FEE
Once both your application and home check have been completed, you will be all set for adoption! When you officially adopt your new dog, we will go over our adoption contract and collect the adoption fee for your new dog. Adoption fees range from $300 to puppies to $200 for adult dogs. Adoption fees include all age appropriate vaccinations, spay/neuter (for dogs over 4 months old), and micro-chipping. For young puppies under 4 months old that have not yet been spayed or neutered, we will apply a $50 credit once you provide proof of spay/neuter by the age of 6 months old. All dogs over the age of 4 months will be spayed/neutered by Virginia Paws for Pits prior to adoption.
*IT IS A REQUIREMENT THAT YOUR PUPPY BE SPAYED/NEUTERED BY THE AGE OF 6 MONTHS. WE RESERVE THE RIGHT TO RECLAIM OWNERSHIP IMMEDIATELY OF ANY DOG THAT HAS NOT BEEN SPAYED/NEUTERED IN THE GIVEN TIME FRAME.
DEPOSIT
Adoption deposits are not required, but may be placed if you choose to do so. If you decide to place a deposit prior to adoption approval, please note that the deposit does not guarantee your approval to adopt. Deposits are NON-REFUNDABLE unless the applicant is denied. Deposits may be placed in the amount of half of the regular adoption fee. The remainder of the adoption fee will be due at the time of adoption/contract signing. Deposits can be placed through PayPal using our email address, virginiapawsforpits@gmail.com. Please be sure to note which dog the deposit is for.
ADOPTION REQUIREMENTS
All applicants must be prepared to care for their adopted dog for the LIFETIME of the dog. This means providing food, supplies, vet care, love, and attention for many, many years. We try very hard to ensure that all of our dogs will be adopted into "forever" homes, but you are the one that will ultimately make that commitment. Moving, marriage, having children, and "not having time" for your pet are not reasons to give your pet away. If any of these things may be in your future, please make sure you plan to keep your new dog as a member of your family regardless before applying to adopt.
Fenced yards are not required for adoption approval but may be required for some dogs depending on their temperament and energy level. If you do not have a fenced in yard or outdoor space, please have a plan on how you will keep your new dog safe outside and provide them with exercise.
If you have existing animals in the home, they must be spayed/neutered for you to be approved to adopt, no exceptions.
ADOPTION FEES
All adoption fees include age appropriate vaccines, deworming, micro-chip, and spay/neuter (for dogs over 4 months). Adoption fees are as follows:
Puppies under 4 months old (not yet spayed/neutered): $300. A non-refundable deposit of $150 may be placed to hold puppies too young to be immediately adopted. A $50 credit will be refunded to the adopter once they have provided proof of spay/neuter between 4-6 months of age.
*IT IS A REQUIREMENT THAT YOUR PUPPY BE SPAYED/NEUTERED BY THE AGE OF 4-6 MONTHS. WE RESERVE THE RIGHT TO RECLAIM OWNERSHIP IMMEDIATELY OF ANY DOG THAT HAS NOT BEEN SPAYED/NEUTERED IN THE GIVEN TIME FRAME.
